The 17th International Conference will focus on both the fundamental and applied aspects of wear and friction of materials at the macro-, micro- and nano-scale.  Like past conferences in this series, two types of papers are invited: (1) full-length research-quality papers that involve modeling and understanding wear mechanisms, surface damage characterization, wear analysis based on carefully-designed experiments, and novel materials and coatings for friction and wear applications, and (2) case studies that describe effective engineering solutions to practical wear problems or the development of useful, new wear testing methods.  Both categories of papers will be critically reviewed for thoroughness and technical quality.  The Wear of Materials Conference provides a unique international forum for researchers and practicing engineers from different disciplines to interact and exchange their latest results.
Specific topics of interest include:

  • Mechanisms of friction and wear of materials and coatings
  • Modeling of friction and wear
  • Materials to resist wear in harsh environments, e.g., corrosive, fretting, abrasive, erosive, impact, high temperature, space, etc.
  • Wear issues in nano- and microelectromechanical systems (NEMS/MEMS)
  • Thin films, super hard coatings and surface modification for wear control
  • Tribology of friction materials
  • Biotribology: Biomimetics, biomedical materials/implants, tribology of skin
  • Novel test methods, sensors and measurement techniques for nano- micro- and macro-wear
  • Wear reduction by lubrication, including self-lubricated composites
  • Case studies of wear-related failures

Keynote lectures will provide critical assessments of our current understanding of various aspects of wear. All papers (except the stand alone posters) will be peer-reviewed and published in a special issue of WEAR.

The following two awards will be presented at the conference:

Kenneth C Ludema Best Paper Award
Peter J Blau Best Poster Award

Language

The language of the conference will be English.
